About Ribbons & Shadows
Ribbons & Shadows™ was founded in 2006 after the diagnosis of a family member with cancer. The founding members realized that a number of their family, friends, and relatives had been diagnosed with cancer. Although all had fought the battle against cancer, some had survived, and others had not. But what they all needed was to know that they had the support, encouragement, and love of those they cared about. Ribbons & Shadows™ offers cards that provide a way to show those diagnosed with cancer that you are there with them at every stage of the battle.
About Our Logo
Our logo including the sun, a boy, and his shadow is the inspiration of a founding member. At a young age, as he watched his mother struggle through chemotherapy, he told his mother:
"If your Mom is sick and you're waiting for her to die and then she does, you don't have to feel too alone. She will always be with you because your shadow is a gift from her. All you have to do is hold your arm up to the wall and you'll see your shadow and your Mom will be with you."
His mother wrote this down in a scrapbook and read it back to him in 2006. This, along with the diagnosis above, sparked the creation of Ribbons & Shadows™.
About the Owners
Ribbons & Shadows™ does all of our illustrations, writing, web design, sales, and production. Sara is our lead card designer and illustrator. Sara is also the person who makes sure your orders get from the Internet to your home or company. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Business Information Technology, but quickly learned she would rather help people and sketch drawings than follow an information technology career. A few too many dilbert-like days at the office lead her to quit and become an owner in Ribbons & Shadows, LLC.
Nathan brings the cards to life with words and serves as a contact person for sales and distribution. He talks to cancer patients to get ideas for cards they would like to see and then gives these suggestions to Sara for illustration. Nathan is a graduate of Virginia Tech (third generation!) in computer engineering and attends law school at night.
Both Sara & Nathan are travelers at heart. We spent time in St. Lucia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and many of the U.S. states last year. Below is a picture of us enjoying the sunset in St. Lucia:
